Fundamental Tips to Managing Online Identity as a Content Creator
2 mins read
Content creators are essentially public figures. Similar to the typical movie star or music artist, streamers are exposed to the public eye constantly. While the prospect of fame can be exciting, it also brings risks to the creator. It can become challenging to maintain your own boundaries once your following grows bigger along the way. As such, it’s important to know what you can do to keep certain things private. Here are some tips for you to be able to manage your online presence and protect yourself.
1. Separate Your Creator and Private Social Media Accounts
Some creators use 2 separate accounts when navigating social media, so that they can keep their private lives secure. You can create an account mainly for your content creator persona so that you can still interact with your community outside of streams or events; at the same time, you can also set your personal accounts as private so that only trusted people can have access to you. Facebook has an option for you to create a fan page instead of allowing your community to add you as a friend directly. Similarly, you can do the same for other social media platforms, too. It also helps to have your creator account verified if possible, so that you can avoid trolls who imitate you and post negatively about you.
2. Keep Personal Information Private
As you continue along the journey, always keep in mind that whatever you post online may be traced back to you. Be careful when sharing about personal information on your streams or posts. Avoid blurting out private stuff such as where you live, your full name, your family members, your contact information, etc. The last thing you want is for your community to invade your private space and cause you unnecessary stress.
Make sure to also orient your friends and family members about your privacy. Seek out their help to protect you and not reveal anything about you. This will also be for their own benefit, as there may be fans who would reach out to them and pester them about you. Likewise, make sure that you use secure platforms which do not provide your personal information to anyone.
3. Have Time For Yourself Outside of Content Creation
The most important aspect of work-life balance is to maintain a regular me-time period. Make sure you allot time in your week for you to take care of yourself and do what you like. You can step away from your workspace and jog around your neighborhood or curl up in bed and read a good book. Remember, content creation requires effort, time, and energy, and you need to take some time off for yourself, too.
Public exposure may be risky and stressful, but you’re not completely helpless. Take note of these 3 tips so that you can keep having fun while still staying safe.
