Cosplay Wig Styling: Techniques for Selecting, Styling, and Maintaining Hairstyles
4 mins read
In the world of cosplay, going for accurate character hairstyles is a crucial aspect of bringing characters to life. In order to bring your costume vision out onto reality, you must be able to learn the ins-and-outs of selecting, styling, and caring for wigs. In this article, we will explore some valuable techniques that you can employ to master the art of wig selection, styling, and maintenance.
1. Selecting the Perfect Wig
Choosing the right wig is the foundation for re-creating your character’s hairstyle. Here are some techniques to help you make the right choice:
- Research: As with costume creation, it’s also important to thoroughly study your character’s various hairstyles. Select the one you want to do, then collect reference images from various angles.
- Material and Quality: If you have the resources for it, try to get high-quality synthetic or human hair wigs. While synthetic wigs are more budget-friendly and often pre-styled, human hair wigs offer greater versatility and a more natural appearance. To help you make a better decision, consider the following information:
- Synthetic wigs are a popular choice among cosplayers due to their cost-effectiveness, low maintenance, and vibrant color retention, offering a wide range of styles and quick drying after washing. However, they are sensitive to heat, have a shorter lifespan, limited restyling options, and sometimes appear less natural due to their shine. Additionally, they might feel less breathable during extended wear, posing a comfort concern.
- Human hair wigs present a bunch of benefits such as their lifelike appearance and texture, versatility for styling including using heat tools, longer durability with proper care, and superior comfort due to their natural breathability. Their ability to mimic real hair allows for diverse styling options, including coloring and heat treatments. However, they come at a higher cost, demand more upkeep, are prone to gradual color fading, and may require restyling after washing.
- Cap Construction: This is also an important aspect when selecting wigs, as it can affect the fit and final look. For example, lace-front wigs can give off a seamless hairline appearance, while full-lace wigs allow for diverse styling options. In addition, lace-front wigs bring a natural-looking hairline. However, you have to exercise care in parting the hair so as not to show the back part of the head too much. Full-lace wigs, on the other hand, help create a realistic, natural look as the strands look attached to your scalp. One thing to note, though, is that full-lace wigs are oftentimes thinner than lace-front wigs so it might not be ideal if the character you’re portraying has a voluminous hair look.
2. Styling The Wig
Once you have selected your wig, you can now start styling. Listed below are some tools you will need:
- Wig stand
- Sharp scissors
- Combs and brushes
- Hair clips
- Hair spray (ideally those which can provide extra hold)
- Heat protectant spray
- Straightening iron, curling iron, hairdryer
- Needle and thread
- Swiss lace
As soon as your tools are ready, you can begin to style your wig as desired. Here are some tips to help you achieve your vision for your character’s hairstyle:
– Cutting and Shaping: Start with a wig that’s close to your desired style. Gradually trim at an angle and shape the wig while comparing it to your reference images. Remember to take small steps and double-check frequently to avoid over-cutting; otherwise, you will need to do repairs by attaching wefts or worse, you might have to buy a new wig.
– Heat Styling: Synthetic wigs can be heat-styled to some extent, but human hair wigs offer more heat resistance. Make sure that your wig can be styled with heat prior to your purchase. Use low heat settings to avoid melting off the strands, and test a small section before proceeding most especially if you are using synthetic wigs.
– Custom Styling: You can experiment with more complex styles by combining wigs, adding wefts, or sewing in extensions. Custom styling takes more skill but can often produce the best results.
3. Caring For Your Wig
To ensure your wig maintains its beauty and healthy condition over time, here are some things you can do:
- Regular Cleaning: Just like natural hair, wigs need to be cleaned regularly. Gently detangle the hair with a wide-tooth comb before washing, then use specially formulated wig shampoos and conditioners to prevent damage.
- Storage: Invest in a wig stand or mannequin head to maintain the wig’s shape when not in use most especially if it was heavily styled. Keep the wig away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and humidity. On the other hand, you can consider more economical options for storage are the use of hairnets and zip lock bags if the wigs are just lightly styled.
- Brushing: As mentioned above, use a wig brush or wide-tooth comb to prevent tangles. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots, holding the wig securely to prevent stress on the cap. It’s also a good idea to use detangling spray on longer wigs prior to brushing them.
- Styling Maintenance: To prolong the life of your styled wig, minimize daily restyling. Use hair spray or styling gel to maintain the wig’s shape and hold.
Knowing how to properly style and maintain your wig can save you lots of time, energy, and money as you go along in your cosplay journey. Remember to do the necessary research and practice your styling techniques as well. Of course, you may also opt to commission someone else to do the wig styling for you if you’re starting out and still learning. Just be patient with yourself and know that you will eventually build up the confidence to do it on your own.
